We are looking to recruit Bank Doctors to enhance our already successful Medical Staff Bank. Successfully candidates will work on an ad-hoc basis in to help provide consistent, high level patient care and to assist with the continuity of care that the Trust provides.

You will be delivering a 24 hour service under Consultant supervision. Fully registered with the GMC, you will be able to demonstrate the experience and skills needed for this role, including time spent in an A&E department caring for both adults and pediatrics.

Working patterns vary and can include weekday day duty, evening, weekend and night duty on full shift.


Main duties of the job

Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust seeks to appoint Specialty Doctors (Middle Grade level) in the Emergency Department. The post holder will be based at Tameside General Hospital. The candidate will be expected to have previous experience post full registration with experience in Emergency Medicine, Accident & Emergency. 

This post will support the Emergency Department Middle Grade Rota at Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust. The Specialty Doctor will be required to deliver emergency clinical care with the support of Consultants.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main aims and objectives of the post

The post holder will provide clinical, administrative, supervisory, educational and training support for the day-to-day functioning of the department. The purpose of the post is to ensure that the highest quality of care is provided to each individual patient who attends the Emergency Department. The prime responsibility of the post holder will be clinical cover of the shop floor.  A full shift system is operational to cover the department on a 24 hour basis.  The post holder will be expected to participate fully in this rota. Further duties include the provision of GP letters within 24 hours of the patient presenting in the department, teaching, participation in Medical Audit and designated management commitments as agreed with the Clinical Supervisor.

 Duties of the post

The post holder will be clinically and educationally responsible to the Consultants in Emergency Medicine.

The post holder will support the Emergency Department in:

Ensuring the effective organisation of the reception, resuscitation, diagnosis and emergency treatment of all patients presenting to the Emergency Department.  The appropriate discharge of patients to a specialist unit within the hospital and other hospitals in the area, General Practitioner or back to the community.

The direct clinical supervision and training of the Emergency Department Junior Medical staff and Emergency Nurse Practitioners working in the Emergency Department as well as the organisation and delegation of clinical work.

The readiness of the department to implement at any time the Major Incident Plan.

The post holder will contribute to the periodic reviews and verifications of these plans.

The monitoring of the quality of service given by the Emergency Department, which includes clinical audit.

Active participation at various committees and working groups.  Participation in development of emergency treatment protocols.

Professional supervision under Consultant guidance aiming to encourage the development of all doctors within Emergency Medicine.

Contributing to the provision of reports for the Coroner, Police Statements and for Complaints management adhering to time frames.  Demonstrating an involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit. 

Contributing to collaborating with Emergency colleagues.

Ensuring own practice is up to date. This will include taking responsibility for own clinical professional development and participation in the Trust wide appraisal system.

Complying with data protection.

Complying with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures.

Job Plan

 Hours of duty are 10 Programmed Activities with the opportunity to undertake up to a further two additional PA’s per week. The specialty doctor rota is currently 1:11 and involves provision of a full shift system during the 24 hour period 7 days a week.

The post holder will be expected to work a 1:4 weekend rota.  The shift patterns within the department that the post holder will be expected to cover are; 6am - 2pm, 7.45am - 4.45pm, 10am – 6pm, 12noon – 8pm, 1pm – 9pm, 2pm – 10pm, 3pm – 11pm, 4pm – 12pm and 10pm – 8am.

There will be no on-call responsibility.

Experience required

The candidate will be expected to have at least 3 years’ experience post full registration with experience in Emergency Medicine.   

Teaching / Training

The Emergency Department is committed to increasing the profile of Education and Training.  The post holder will be required to participate fully in the education and training of medical students, trainee doctors, paramedical, nursing and other appropriate personnel. 

There are weekly training sessions for all doctors on Thursday afternoons. The post holder will have one day every fortnight protected for SPA (supporting professional activity) relating to administration, training, teaching, continuous professional development.

There is new, state of the art postgraduate medical centre on site with lecture rooms and several seminar rooms provided with extensive audio-visual facilities. Facilities for poster preparation and presentation are available at the centre. There is a staffed library, a dining / sitting room. A full programme of academic meetings, seminars and tutorials is organised for hospital Doctors, General Practitioners and other professionals of the hospital.


The appointee will be encouraged to undertake appropriate research.  The department is keen to undertake specific research for Emergency Medicine. Dr Qureshi is the department’s link to the Trust Research Group.

Clinical Governance

The department has developed a Clinical Governance programme in line with current recommendations and trust requirements. Dr Contractor is responsible for Clinical Governance & Audit, Dr Ashraf for Medical Education and Dr Ghanayem is responsible for Paediatrics & guidelines/care-bundles. This is a multi-professional programme and members of all staff groups are required to participate in delivering the governance agenda.  Regular clinical audit sessions are held within the department and hospital. The appointee will be expected to participate in such sessions. The appointee will also be required to participate in appropriate continuing medical education activities.

Maintaining Medical Excellence

The Trust is committed to providing safe and effective care for patients. To ensure this there is an agreed procedure for medical staff that enables them to report quickly and confidentially, concerns about the conduct, performance or health of medical colleagues (Chief Medical Officer, December 1996).  All medical staff, practising in the Trust will ensure that they are familiar with the procedure and comply.


 The Trust requires all Medical staff to participate fully in the annual appraisal process.  For the Emergency Department all Specialty Doctors appraisals will be done by the Clinical Supervisor for the doctor.

  • Full registration with experience in Emergency Medicine.

  • Higher Qualification: - MCEM, FRCS, MRCS, MRCP, FRCA.
