Tameside & Glossop ICO are looking for dynamic and motivated individuals to expand our current dermatology department here at Tameside. The post holder will join a team of 2.6 WTE consultants, two GPs with special interests, two nurse practitioners and one specialist nurses and a full-time trainee registrar as part of the HEENW rotation (Health Education England North West).

Main duties of the job

The post holders will be required to drive improvement in the service that is required by patients, staff and the government, and to promote best practice in the management of all cases, which will include delivery of cancer pathways, outpatient clinics and minor surgical sessions. The role will also include driving improvement in the service by facilitating training to junior doctors and assisting in pathway design to enhance the dermatological service offered to the local community

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

There are 447 acute beds on the hospital site, including 39 beds on the Acute Medical Unit (AMU).  In recent years, Tameside Hospital has undergone significant re-development, including a purpose-built day case theatre and endoscopy Unit, a renal unit, and MR and CT scanning developments.

The Trust has state of the art diagnostic and treatment facilities including new main and day case theatres, a pharmacy, new radiology facilities, new surgical wards, new outpatient departments and a new main entrance to the hospital. The scheme has also delivered a modern and comprehensive multi-disciplinary Education and Training Centre, multi-storey car parking and new pathology laboratories.


 Management Structure

The Dermatology department is located within the Division of Medicine and Clinical Support, which comprises of the Emergency Department, the Acute Medical Unit, Intensive Care, the Coronary Care Unit, General Medicine whose sub specialties include; Diabetes/Endocrinology, Neurosciences, Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Rheumatology, Respiratory Medicine, Dermatology, Haematology.

The Chief Executive of the Trust is Mrs. Karen James and the Trust Medical Director is Mr Brendan Ryan who is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine.  Mrs. Patricia Cavanagh is the Deputy Chief Executive and Ms. Sue Toal is the Director for Operations.

There are regular divisional and departmental  meetings which the post holder will be expected to contribute to, which include (but are not limited to) the Division of Medicine and Urgent Care (monthly) where all consultants within the division meet with the management team, the Dermatology Business Group (monthly), clinical governance/audit and multi-disciplinary meetings.

The Dermatology service has evolved to provide a full range of secondary care services at Tameside Hospital plus nurse-led primary care clinics. The three consultant dermatologists (soon to be five) all run adult and Paediatric clinics and have minor operation lists.

Paediatric clinics run in children’s outpatients and we have excellent working relationships with Paediatric colleagues.

Dermatology surgery takes place in a dedicated fully equipped and staffed minor operation room.

All current consultants perform ward referrals as required.

Two nurse practitioners work across primary and secondary care seeing new and follow-up patients. Two nurse specialists in dermatology provide nurse-led education and follow-up for children and adults with chronic disease, phototherapy and dressings, and the department also offers Iontophoresis. One of the nurse practitioners and one specialist nurse have nurse-led surgery lists and have additional expertise as cancer nurses.

The trust has a well-established Local Skin MDT which is led by the dermatology department with active involvement of the maxillofacial team and plastic surgeons. The consultants run a monthly clinical meeting outpatient session which allows discussion of more difficult cases.

There is a monthly departmental meeting where business includes service development, clinical governance and audit and to which the appointee will be expected to contribute.

The dermatology department prides itself in the good relationship that exists between the medical staff and management. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute positively to the development, not only of the dermatology department in accordance with agreed plans, but to the hospital as a whole. 



The department has a modern Windows based computer system (Lorenzo). This is linked with the rest of the Trust including the imaging department and the pathology laboratory for ease of request and subsequent reports.  The department is fully functional and supported with PACS.

The post holder will be provided with secretarial support and office accommodation.


The post holder will participate in the day to day running of the dermatology service and will also have every opportunity to participate in the management of the dermatology service.


This will involve the post holder in:-


  • Provision of out-patient services for dermatology patients as per agreed job plan


  • Further develop existing clinical protocols and pathways to maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of diagnosis and treatment minimising hospital attendance where appropriate


  • Provision of a consultant-led inpatient referral service, providing advice for patients within general medical services in conjunction with the existing post holders, working with the junior medical staff to ensure optimum effective management of patients


  • Take part in professional supervision and development of all the junior and middle grade doctors within the team including appraisal and personal development planning with his/her team


  • Demonstrate commitment to, and participation in, clinical governance, risk management, clinical audit, appraisal and annual job planning process


  • Promote effective communication within the department and with the wider hospital by regular liaison with specialist medical and service departments within the hospital


  • The post holder will provide additional clinical administrative, supervisory, educational and training support for the day today functioning of the department. Active participation in the future development of the department and the hospital is essential.
